From Searching to Action: Reimagining the Nonprofit Finance Workspace

For nonprofit finance teams, the challenge is rarely a lack of data. More often, it is the time spent searching for what needs attention, coordinating work across teams and systems, and determining what should happen next.

As expectations for stewardship, compliance and strategic insight continue to grow, finance professionals need more than accounting software that records what has happened. They need technology that helps them understand what is happening now and why, reduces searching and repetitive review, and helps them move confidently from insight to action.

That is the experience we are building across Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT®. Our goal is not to remove human judgment from nonprofit accounting. It is to reduce searching, repetitive review and manual coordination while keeping finance professionals in control of decisions and approvals.

At the center of this evolution is our Action Hub approach. Action Hubs are designed to surface priorities, prioritize work based on each user’s role, and connect finance professionals directly to the workflows where action happens. New overview areas, homepage capabilities and action-oriented workspaces are bringing that approach to life across the homepage, General Ledger, Treasury and Payables experiences.

A More Useful Starting Point

The revamped Financial Edge NXT homepage gives finance professionals faster access to the work that matters most. Users can personalize their experience with tiles such as Closing Assistant, Favorite Queries, Favorite Reports, and Payment Assistant™, while intelligent insights surface relevant signals from across the solution. Together, these capabilities create a more relevant starting point for the workday and reduce the effort required to identify priorities and take action.

The personalized Financial Edge NXT homepage brings frequently used tools, reports and relevant financial insights into one view.

Bringing General Ledger Work Into Focus

The General Ledger Overview is one of the clearest examples of this approach. Finance professionals can see tasks that need attention, including out-of-balance batches, batches pending approval and previous fiscal periods that remain open. Selecting an item takes the user directly to the relevant area with the appropriate filters already applied.

Closing Assistant adds visibility into period-end work by showing whether unposted transactions or batches remain and connecting users to the appropriate workflow. The GL Reconciliation Tracker, currently in limited availability, shows which accounts have been reconciled, which remain in progress and where attention is needed. Together, these experiences reduce reliance on separate checklists and give teams a clearer view of close progress.

General Ledger Overview surfaces close-related tasks and connects finance teams directly to the workflows needed to resolve them.

One Command Center for Treasury Activity

Treasury Overview brings bank and credit card information into one central location. Users can customize the page with the accounts most relevant to their work, review activity and move into the respective account areas when more detail is needed.

Rather than reviewing banks, feeds, and accounts separately before determining what needs attention, finance professionals can use one overview to assess treasury activity, identify potential issues and decide on their next steps.

Treasury Overview centralizes selected bank and credit card information to help teams assess activity and determine next steps.

Bringing Payables Priorities Into One Workspace

Payables work involves creating and reviewing records, monitoring payment runs, resolving exceptions and moving approvals forward, with different responsibilities depending on each person’s role.

The Payables Overview will bring that work into a centralized, permission-aware workspace. Its Needs Attention tile will surface role-specific payment run tasks. Creators will see runs with created or rejected statuses, exceptions requiring reprocessing, and unresolved validation issues. Reviewers and approvers will see runs awaiting approval as well as returned or rejected payments. A ‘Payments by Status’ tile will provide a quick view of payments across statuses such as open, pending and voided.

Payment Assistant complements this broader overview. Users can already add a Payment Assistant tile to their personalized homepage, while the planned Payables Overview will connect role-relevant priorities, payment status and common actions in one focused workspace.

This is where the Action Hub model becomes particularly valuable. It can help each person see the work that applies to their role and move more directly into the task requiring attention.

The Payables Overview brings role-relevant payment run priorities and payment status into one focused workspace.

Building an Intelligent Command Center for Nonprofit Finance

These experiences are part of our broader vision for Financial Edge NXT as an intelligent, connected command center for nonprofit finance. Innovations such as Import Mapping Assistant, AI-powered Document Intelligence and the Chart of Accounts Health Advisor apply intelligence within specific workflows. Overview areas and Action Hubs extend that principle into the daily work of helping finance teams answer two critical questions: What matters most right now, and what should I do next?

Financial Edge NXT will always be a trusted system of record. Increasingly, it is also becoming a system of intelligent action that helps finance teams move from record to insight, and from insight to action, creating more capacity for the work only they can do: strengthening stewardship, guiding strategy, and helping their organizations advance their missions.

Availability

The Payables Action Hub is being released in waves to customers, with continued rollout underway toward general availability by end of August. The new homepage experience, General Ledger Overview, and Treasury Action Hub are generally available to all Financial Edge NXT customers.
